We’re living in Kuwait, and it is a fascinating country. It is a unique place, and very different from what I was expecting. I love talking about and saving money, so there are lots of fun things for me to explore. What gets your attention as soon as you move here are the gas prices in Kuwait.
In the US, we haven’t seen gas prices below a dollar since the late 1990’s. I was chugging along in high school in my not-cool Hyundai Excel hatchback and spending more on Sonic drinks each week than I spent on gas. Recently, the national average for gas has been around $2.30.
Gas prices in Kuwait are the cheapest in the world. A gallon runs about 75 cents.
It’s no surprise that Middle Eastern countries are high on the list as well. It looks like the US is expensive compared to the rest of the world, but at the bottom of the list you get into the five dollar and over range. Hong Kong has the most expensive gas in the world. Today when I converted the HK to USD, it was $7.22 a gallon.
How much is a gallon of regular drinking water in Kuwait?
$2.61 a gallon. Yes, bottled drinking water is more expensive than gas in Kuwait.
Kuwait actually has the highest water consumption in the world, which I assume is why purchasing bottled water in Kuwait is more expensive that in America. I find it fascinating that you can buy almost FOUR gallons of gas for the same price as ONE gallon of drinking water.
I love filling up my Kia mid-size SUV and paying around $8.00. On the flip side, I’m spending over a hundred dollars a month on bottled drinking water, and the cost of cow’s milk is astronomical. Between water and milk for a family of five we spend over $200 a month on liquids. That cancels out our savings on gas. It reminds me of the “Even Steven” episode of Seinfeld.
How much is gas where you are?
Are you paying more for your liquid intake~water/milk/soda than what you spend for gas each month?
