Why create a mission statement?
When you know your priorities as a family, it can change your life.Once you have your mission statement, you can create a budget in line with your values. You will be able to make decisions more easily, because you can base them on your mission statement. You can help your kids understand what you want to accomplish as a family.
How do you create a family mission statement?
Ask yourself what you enjoy. What makes you smile? Your spouse? Think about your kids, what do they love? What do you dream about. Value? What would your ideal future, if you had no limitations, look like.
How about if you had five extra hours a week, what would you spend that time on? Try to ask yourself these things, and answer them without thinking, “It won’t work because…I can’t because…I am supposed to want…”
Once the ideas start flowing, jot everything down on paper. Writing it down will clarify your ideas and help you focus. Remember to brainstorm without placing limitations on yourself.
Come up with your top three ideas. What is it that you can’t get out of your head? What you keep thinking about is what you should be focusing on in life.
This is my family.
We are on a mission.
Our mission statement is our guiding light. How does our mission statement help guide us?
~Outlines our family goals.
~Aligns our budget with our values.
~Guides the decisions we make for our family.
~Helps our children understand what we are trying to accomplish as a family.
Ours might seem simple, but it works well for our family and keeps us focused on our goals:
We want to travel and explore as a family. Give our kids a great education, through life experiences and school. Save for our future.
For someone else it might be:
The above is not mine, as much as I have wanted to enjoy gardening, I am not a gardener.
This brings up another point: If you are stuck, ruling things out is a good place to start. Think of what you don’t enjoy, and make sure those don’t end up on your list. Amazingly, they can creep in if you let them!
